Kitchen gear for a newbie cook

This is a hypothetical question -- not for me, but for some theoretical newbie cook. Imagine said person asks you, "What kitchen equipment should I buy to learn to cook?" What would you suggest?

I mean a slot toaster. Toast your bread, put your cheese between the slices, and nuke for about 10-15 seconds depending on how 'hot' your microwave cooks. Quick and easy for when you're starving and you're staring at said burnt dinner. :D

Hmm! I had not thought of that option! Mostly I do open-faced cheese sandwiches with a slice of tomato.
