Kitchen gear for a newbie cook

This is a hypothetical question -- not for me, but for some theoretical newbie cook. Imagine said person asks you, "What kitchen equipment should I buy to learn to cook?" What would you suggest?

I'd suggest a Pyrex bowl. Good for mixing, serving, microwaving things in, and best of all, serves as a double-boiler for melting cheese, chocolate, etc.–you seat it on top of a saucepan!
