Wellllll... I think you are thinking of the obsolete Imperial cup, which is rarely used these days. But currently in England (and most places outside the US) metric cups are used.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cup_(volume) has good information. Wikipedia is generally excellent on culinary measures, actually.
