I accidentally bought some self-raising flour instead of plain. I want to use it up. What would happen if I used it in my bread machine? What adjustments, if any, should I make?

When you use plain flour to make bread, do you usually add anything afterwards? You can check the pack ingredients/blurb to see how much baking powder they added to the plain flour and compare with what you usually do.

self-rising has baking powder in it. Most bread machine recipes call for yeast rather than baking powder, so you may be out of luck. :( You could use it for quickbreads ( mmm, pancakes ), or just return it to get what you meant. I find when using the breadmachine that it's worth it to get the flour meant specifically for bread machines, since it produces a less crumbly loaf.

In Canada, our All Purpose Flour is all you need. There is also "bread flour" available, but it bakes into bread that is too light and 'spongy'. In the US you are out of luck, you have to buy "bread flour" because your all purpose flour doesn't have enough gluten to trap the bubbles that makes bread rise.

That's interesting, I didn't realize it was a regional thing.

Let there be cake?

I've never used a bread machine, I'd imagine it has the potential to go all 'splody, but self raising is great for cakes, biscuits, scones and cookies.

Cake, muffins, scones, pancakes, pikelets, various kinds of quickbreads. It won't work for bread-bread.
